Houghton Regis Town Council New Cemetery Sub Committee

Held virtually on 1/2/21

Did you know that there is no legal responsibility to provide burial grounds? No legal duty means no funding. This conundrum has faced our Town for many years and many previous Councils have talked a lot but actually did very little. The matter is now pressing with no burial spaces left in the town.

The big problem is, the Town Council have no land and land suitable for burial is also ideal for building on so to acquire a burial ground means we would have to compete with property developers. Luckily Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) own land in Houghton Regis and have suggested some sites. These are challenging prospects, because CBC will develop all viable sites, so the offer is somewhat difficult.

However, in a thoroughly constructive meeting where several options were considered, the Sub Committee agreed to progress with investigations into the suitability of a site in Grendall Lane. There are still many obstacles to be overcome but the way the various groups on the Council came to progress this very difficult and sensitive issue gives me great hope that we can continue to move forward.
